Reader’s Question:

My girlfriend and I live in the same city here in North Dakota. We also have the same car insurance company. Why are her rates cheaper than mine?

Car insurance companies in America, including those in North Dakota, employ different methods in determining premiums. However, it is usually done by calculating the potential risks posed by operating a motor vehicle. Factors that are considered in these calculations are based on statistical data.

The reason women tend to be offered lower car insurance premiums and/or discounts by insurance providers is based on studies that have shown women to be more careful drivers compared to men. Women rarely exhibit dangerous driving behaviors unlike men. Females are also less likely to show signs of anxiety and road rage, thus driving ability and quick response time are not compromised. This fundamentally means that women get involved in road accidents less often and have cleaner driving records. This is then interpreted by insurance companies as a more favorable risk to them since women tend to file claims less often than men and could mean big savings to the company. Because females are generally viewed as safer drivers in comparison to their male counterparts, competitive rates are given to females.

If you are worried that your car insurance company is ripping you off, make a call to your local insurance agent and inquire about discounts you may also be eligible for.
