Reader’s Question:

If I let my friend borrow my vehicle and they receive a speeding ticket will it go on my car insurance rate in Bismarck or theirs?

Sanders

Bismarck, ND

States law can differ but generally the speeding ticket should have been written to your friend and his license number and therefore would go on his driver’s license record and affect his car insurance rate and not your insurance rate in Bismarck.

If the speeding ticket was written to the vehicle instead for say an expired registration then it would be put against your license in most states.

A moving violation citation received by somebody else driving your vehicle would generally not affect your car insurance rates.

Reader’s Question:

I recently had a seizure and my drivers license was suspended in Bismarck until all medical tests have been finished, at which time I may be able to drive again, my daughter is on my insurance policy as an additional driver (secondary), and will be required to drive me to work etc. What changes should I make to my insurance policy and what are the consequences if I do not change my policy?

John

Bismarck, ND

Auto insurance companies in Bismarck, North Dakota vary on their definitions for principal, primary, casual, secondary and occasional driver. Because of this you will have to talk to your insurance provider’s agent to verify if your daughter needs to be moved up to the primary driver or if your household will be insured properly if the insurance policy stays as is.

The risk that you will face if you do not talk to your insurance provider regarding this and follow any changes they suggest is that they might be able to deny any claims in the future. They could be able to refuse if their definitions of secondary and primary drivers were abided to. You will want your daughter and car properly insured for any accidents that might happen so it is wise to just check with your insurance company and make sure you are following their guidelines.
